After finishing with a 44-24-14 2010 record, the Red Wings finished up the season with a 4-1 series decision loss to the San Jose Sharks. In the off season, the team acquired five free agents; G Joey MacDonald, D Ruslan Salei, C Mike Modano and LW Jiri Hudler.
In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the team selected Riley Sheahan with the 21st overall selection Sheahan was one of 4 centre’s drafted (Calle Jarnkrok, Louis-Marc Aubry and Brooks Macek). Also drafted were LW Teemu Pulkkinen, G Petr Mrazek and D Benjamin Marshall.
Modano, who is now 40, puts a strain on the club as it will have to move either Drew Miller or Mattias Ritola in order to get under the salary cap and meet the 23-man roster limit.
